Crisis Response

Moving Day

  • Strip beds.
  • Make sure children and pets are safe and not in harm's way.
  • Keep your phone connected through moving day. After the van leaves and you finish last-minute calls, pack the phone in one of your suitcases.
  • Show movers around and share your expectation that your possessions will be properly inventoried.
    • Check to see that the condition of possessions is correctly described on the inventory with clear indications of the exact location of existing scratches, worn or marred places.
    • Write "subject to further inspection for concealed loss or damage" on contract when you sign to protect yourself in the event you find damage while unpacking.
    • Read bill of lading and inventory bills carefully before signing. Keep this paperwork in a safe place.
    • Make sure your copy of the moving company inventory is legible. This inventory will be less detailed than the earlier inventory.
  • Put all keys together in a safe spot.
  • Confirm that the moving van driver has the correct delivery date, address, phone number and directions.
  • Check each room one last time. Don't forget to look in closets and cupboards, the basement and garage! Check the entire property before leaving.
  • Note all utility meter readings.
  • Place valuables, jewelry, purses and family and personal records files in a safe place (inaccessible to movers), or use registered mail. Place a copy of the Packer's inventory in hand-carried luggage.
  • Carry travelers' checks for quick, available funds.
  • Check thermostat to make sure temperature is set appropriately. Close and lock all windows and doors and make sure all appliances are turned off. Leave forwarding address, garage door openers and keys, if agreed to, for the new owners or renters.
  • If your home will be vacant when you leave, provide keys and your contact information to a relative, neighbor or real estate agent. Notify your insurance agent and the local police department that the home will be empty.
  • Make sure that all containers and crated items have the moving company's inventory tag or tape on them and that each item is listed in the moving company inventory.
